Avon River, Christchurch, 13 December 2009

Thanks to Santa for joining us for this special event.

The day dawned fine and clear, for the final race of the year organized by the Christchurch Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team. This race was based on the popular loop around the Avon River making for some lovely views as well as some great shady sections to the course. The events for the day comprised a 5km race, 10km race and children’s 2.5km race. With three separate start lines it took some good coordination to get everyone started together and on time. As a special treat we also had Santa taking part in the children’s race riding his bike to give the children someone to chase.

We saw some good performances particularly from some of our international competitors. In a good run Andy Hilton from York won the 10km in 35.13, while Sabine Schweitzer made it a double for the international competitors by winning the women’s 10km in 43.57. In the 5km Nick Apostolides from the USA won in 19.02 while the first female was Sandra Petherick in a time of 23.57. In the children’s event George Addis was hot on Santa’s heels the whole way around and was rewarded with first place in a time of 10.29, Tayla Clarke was again the first amongst the girls winning in 11.11.

All in all it was a great finale for our races in 2009 and we now look forward to some great races to come in 2010. Best of luck with our training and have a wonderful holiday season.
