Mark Morrison from Takadau, Hawkes Bay and Carolynn Tassie of Auckland win the 10th Annual Self-Transcendence 24 Hour Track Races held at Auckland's Sovereign Stadium last weekend.

Mark 35, running in his inaugural 24-hour race, built on the promise he had shown in running 121 km in the 2005 Self-Transcendence 12 Hour Race, and finished with an excellent 216.924 km. He showed maturity and good pace judgement as he moved past early leader, Robert Ware of Greytown, at the 75 km mark ... reaching 100 km in 10:08 and 100 miles in 16:41 enroute to winning the 2006 New Zealand 24 Hour Championship.

Robert 33, also running in his first 24 hour race, had run a fast 7:51 in the 2006 Gold Coast 100 km Race. He led the field through 50 km in 4:14 and reached 100 km in 10:32. Like Mark, he showed strength and courage in the difficult latter stages to pass 100 miles in 18:24 and achieved a very fine 204.549 km.

Iestyn Lewis 28, from Hamilton (formerly from the U.K.) showed the grit he must have needed to finish the Bob Graham 42 Peak, 115 km Mountain Challenge in England's Lakes District in under 24 hours. He came out of a mid race slump to finish strongly with 176.196 km. His good friend, Andrew Murray 26, also hailing from the U.K., struggled with injury, but never gave up, and finished with 150 km.

Albie Jane from Stratford had another absorbing duel with his friendly-rival Barney McBryde ( 2003/4 24-hour champion from Auckland) ... Albie finishing with 168.080 km to Barney's 166.023 km.

Women's 24-Hour Championship winner Carolynn ran 201.869 km ... making it 5 wins in a row (all over 200 km) ... a remarkable achievement. Following her 212 km 7th place at the 2006 I.A.U. World Championships in Taipei, Carolynn trained and ran this race carrying a leg injury making her super-excellent performance all the more impressive.

It was a quality women's field with former New Zealand 100 km World Championship representatives Val Muskett and Lilac Flay (runner-up 1998 I.A.U. 100 km World Cup in Japan) joining Carolynn ... the first time all 3 have met in a 24 hour race.

Carolynn (10:44) led Val ( 10:49) and Lilac (11:14) past 100 km and in the second half was the more consistent runner. Val took a long break at 17 hours and was past by a persistent Lilac. Although Val came back refreshed and ran a very strong 35 km during the last 4 hours it was not enough to catch the determined Lilac who finished with 176.296 km to Val's 172.173 km.

Niribili File (60) ran 109.397 km to establish a New Zealand women's (60-65) 24 Hour benchmark. Race-walker Robert Radley set a New Zealand Men's (45-49) 50 mile best of 11:28:38.

    2006 Self-Transcendence 12-Hour winner Darrin Heaven, Auckland

In the Self-Transcendence 12-Hour Race Auckland's Darrin Heaven improved his 2005 performane by 13 km and ran a very good 105.787 km ... ahead of masters champion Gary Regtien (70) who ran a fine 96.694 km to set a New Zealand men's (70-75) 12-Hour best.

    Super-masters athlete Colin Clifton (80) race-walked 67.800 km to set a New Zealand men's (80-85) 12 Hour record.

    6hrwinners
6 Hour Finishers ... Alesha Thorpe, Paula Burke, Linda Law & Graham Cleal

In the Self-Transcendence 6 Hour Race Paula Burke from Nelson showed promise to finish with 51.826 km from Auckland's Alesha Thorpe with 50.049km followed by race walkers Linda Law and Graham Cleal.
