On Sunday morning Hagley Park awoke to the soft tread of running shoes on asphalt as competitors in the Sri Chinmoy Self-Transcendence 3rd annual 100 and 50km Race in Hagley Park set off. At 7.30 am the weather conditions were good for the runners with an overcast sky and moderate breeze keeping the temperatures down after recent days of bright sunshine. This year's race boasted 5 individual 100k competitors and 5 teams of 4 runners, with 16 competitors in the 50k.

Tim Cranfield took an early lead in the men's 100k division and Iris Klapper in the women's. With three aid stations posted around the 2.5k circuit and marshals/encouragers at each corner, runners were able to stock up on fluids, jellybeans or delicious snacks from the Lotus-Heart as the race was underway. The 10k race started at 9.00am after a breakfast at the Lotus-Heart, with around 40 runners and walkers competing alongside the marathon competitors. Most of the 10k racers finished in under an hour as the marathon runners solidered on. Nearing the end of the morning James Langley won the 50k with a time of 4 hours 2 minutes, with Nicky Cummings taking the women's division at 4.15.

Later in the afternoon the remaining runners were treated to singing and flute along the course from the Christchurch Centre marshals. The 100k team title was taken by New Brighton Athletics club with a time of 7.50. Tim Cranfield was a faraway winner in the men's 100k, timing 9.16 and coming in ahead of the 4-person Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team who timed 9.48. Second place went to Kim Ranfield with a time of 12. 12, making his last turnaround just before the cutoff. Iris Klapper was the only finisher in the women's division, completing her 100k at 12 hours 41 and transcending her last year's distance, with Tanya Ryan also transcending her distance and completing 85k.

A great day was had by all and the awards ceremony at 7.30 was followed by a delicious dinner provided by the Lotus-Heart.
