Hagley Park North - Christchurch multi-day runner Ujjwala Mettrick 24, wins inaugural ultra walk!

The day dawned with a beautiful sunrise and a chorus of birds, which made us feel good to be alive. Slowly the brave walkers arrived, with smiles showing apprehension and excitement. 7am neared and the brave gathered on the start line. Marshalls, timers, lap counters and aid station ready?!

On your marks, get set, GO!

The day saw a small but enthusiastic turn out of competitors including many who had not taken part in an event like this before.

Leading from the second lap was Ujjwala Mettrick, 24 years old. She is an experienced ultra distance competitor who has completed The Sri Chinmoy 6 Day Race, two previous 12 hour walks and also multiple 47 mile runs. Ujjwala completed 82km in the 12 hours. The first female and overall winner, an amazing feat.

The first male was Angus Bromley completing 81km. He stayed cheerful and his pace was consistent the whole day. We can not forget his trusty helper Joan who is also a keen walker.

We had a good turn out of teams and there was a close finish between the teams ‘3 days in town’ and ‘Go like the Klappers’. There was an intense finish to the teams race with ‘3 days in town’ just managing to hold out the "Klappers". We thank everyone for there enthusiasm and support and look forward to seeing you all again next year.
