Sumner, Christchurch

The sun rising over the Pacific Ocean welcomed athletes to the Sri Chinmoy Self-Transcendence 10km, 5km and Children's 2.5km races at Sumner Esplanade, Christchurch.

Still weather and a flat course encouraged some fast times in all events, especially in the men's 10km with all three medallists clocking under the 40-minute mark. Guy Dryden led strongly for first place in 38.58, followed by Neil Christian with a personal best time of 39.37 and Shane Thrower who broke 40 minutes with seconds to spare, 39.58 for third place. The 10km women also put up a good show with Kristy MacDonald taking first place in 43.57, followed by Michelle Steenkamp with 44.14 for second.

The 5km men were led by Russell Taylor who won with a respectable 19.07, while Owen Foster achieved a very close break of the 20 minute barrier, clocking 19.59 for a silver medal. In the women's field Sandy Jones had an easy victory with 23.14 and Alicia Mander placed second with 24.28.

Thomas Anderson (10) sped to the front of the Children's 2.5km race with an excellent time of 9.57, with Erin Downie (9) hot on his heels for first girl and second overall in 10 minutes flat. Zinan Bennett (10) and Sam Clark (8) took second and third in the boy's race with 10.54 and 11.02 respectively, while in the girl's race Emily Jones (7) was our youngest medallist of the day with 12.46 for second place, and Kaitlin Christian (10) took out third in 14.07.

Congratulations to all participants!
