31 March 2013 - Sri Chinmoy Waimairi Beach Challenge - Results

An unexpected rainstorm and a technicolour sunrise greeted participants in this year's Waimairi Beach Challenge. Luckily the wet weather cleared up by the time registrations opened and runners were able to enjoy a beautiful warm day out on the course. High tidal conditions and soft sand created a real challenge for runners as they headed out along the beach towards the mouth of the Waimakariri River and for the 24km runners flooded trails added to the fun as they returned through woodlands and duneside trails.

In the men's 24km race Jason Sweney led strongly to finish in 1:36:19 and last year's winner Carrie Lee again took out the women's event in 1.58.28. The 14km event saw a close finish for the men, with James Hoogenboezm taking first place in 56.10, followed seconds later by Kevin Muir in 56.13. The women's 14km race was won by Joanne Stevenson in 1.04.36.

We were delighted to see the children's 2.5km event had a record number of participants this year. The race was a family triumph with Chanel Muir (10) placing first overall in a fantastic time of 12.03, and his sister Jacinta Muir (13) winning the girl's event in 16.17. The kids also enjoyed a surprise Easter Egg hunt after the event.

Congratulations to all participants and we look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events!
